Virginia Bloggers Appreciate Y-O-U!!

This year, I've really focused on my children setting goals in reading. My district uses Fountas and Pinnell reading levels to determine whether a child is below, on, or above grade level. For my 2nd graders, at the beginning of the year, to be on-level, they have to be on a GRL of J and each month, they progress (hopefully!) and by the end of May/June, they should be on a GRL N.

To help keep my students accountable during their IDR reading times, I created sticky notes that help remind them of their independent reading goals. You can see that post (and grab the freebie from there, too!) here!
During Guided Reading groups, I also have goals for them as well- mainly on fluency and what GRL to be on by the end of the month. Depending on what GRL they are on depends on their goal. I allow the students to "come" up with their goal, but there is a lot (wink!) of teacher guidance as they set their group goals.
As they read daily, I have them daily (most days) reflect on what they read and share with a partner after to discuss briefly (very brief, 2-3 minutes...). Since I can't get to every one, every day, I came up with this reflection log.

Students can bring this when I conference with them and we can discuss goals, progress, etc. Makes for a very quick and convenient glimpse into what they read daily. Takes lots of modeling, but well worth it. Click on the link above to get your copy!
