"In what other profession..." article

Y'all have got to read this article.

http://m.examiner.com/k-12-in-topeka/in-what-other-profession

This was shared by a friend of mine on Facebook, so I thought I'd pass it along to my blogland buds :)

It's about the "complaints" of the teaching profession (from those looking at us from the outside)...also click on the link for the letter the author wrote complaining about AYP...I love his quote about "adequate yearly diddly poop"...bahaha :)  I want to give this man a standing ovation...because I'm living the results of not making AYP for 3 years now (we are in year 2 of school improvement).  It's not fun.  I repeat....IT IS NOT FUN.

Have a wonderful weekend...and try not to ask for a raise anytime soon. (Not that we'd get one anyways lol :)

  2. Thanks for sharing! I just posted this on my facebook too! I feel the same way, don't even get me started! On one of our PD days recently we went over accomodation and modifications we have to do for our IEP kids. Then they were like, BUT they still have to take the state test (with some accomodations, but still). I really liked the end of that article...such a good point!

On another note, the school I taught at 2 years ago ended up being "restructured" because of failure to meet AYP...meaning, everyone had to reapply for their jobs if they wanted to stay at that school. Needless to say, I did not apply and went on my merry little way to a different school! Hope that doesn't happen for you!

P.S. After proofreading this, and thinking of everything I type, could I possibly use any more exclamation points?!

  3. I wish it were possible to get the outsiders to stop with the foolish talk and be able to see what we do. Sadly before anyone volunteers to help they run their mouths or hid behind their keyboards. It's really sad. I don't want fanfare and parades, but I'd certainly welcome volunteers to stop by and help file, run a center or scrape that kid off the ceiling, please. Oh well we must continue on.

  4. Thank you for posting this article. When I taught third grade it would always make me mad when our grade would have a child that failed the S.O.L. tests. Yes, they might have failed, but if they moved into our disrict not knowing all of their letters, let alone able to read many words, and we got them from that to a score of a 380, why isn't there anything to show THAT growth? Nope. Its just they failed. Yeesh.

Okay, I'm going to climb down off my soap box now!

  5. Thanks for sharing the article. Totally goes along with what I am reading for my master classes. It is sad that this is true. I feel the world would be a better place everyone was a waiter or waitress for a while and a teacher (even if it was just for an hour).
